Message from Emily Martin    emartin@usni.org

Subject: USNI Photo Request

I am the photo researcher for the U.S. Naval Institute, a non-profit located in Annapolis Maryland. For the upcoming issue of Naval History, our bi-monthly periodical, we are featuring an article by a former Navy Hospital Corpsman assigned to Charlies Company, 1st Reconnaissabce Battalion, 1st Marine Division in 1967.

His article covers a patrol he was on in May 1967 out of Da Nang. We're looking for photos from the time period of 1st Recon Battalion with Corpsman on patrol.

Is it possible that any of your members might be able to help?

Please let me know if you have any questions and I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,

Emily Martin

Reconners, I just approved the addition of Thanh Trang to this group. Thang, pronounced Tang, is a Vietnamese guide that his guided over 20 1st Recon members around VN for the past 15 years.

He was the guide that led us to Camp Reasoner and the discovery of the main gate in 2011. He also found and led us to Howard's Hill. There were Eight 1st Bn Reconners on this trip. He has led 4 Recon only trips and will guide one more Recon only trip this March. He loosely meets our criteria for membership by providing support to the 1st Recon Bn Association. IF THERE IS OPPOSITION TO TANG’S INCLUSION, I WILL REMOVE HIM IMMEDIATELY. — with Thanh Tran, Harry Hayes and Daniel B Bracken.

CPL. MICHAEL GEORGE MURDOCK

Corporal Murdock entered the U.S. Marine Corps from Washington and was a member of Company B, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. On February 1, 1968, he was a member of a reconnaissance team aboard a CH-46A Sea Knight being inserted into central Vietnam when the helicopter was hit by enemy fire and crashed west of Da Nang, killing Cpl Murdock. All other crew members and passengers aboard the aircraft survived the crash; however, they were not able to recover Cpl Murdock's remains from the downed aircraft when they left the crash site. In 1974, the North Vietnamese government returned as set of remains to U.S. custody, and analysts were able to identify them as those of Cpl Murdock.

Message to 1st Recon Battalion Association: Gentlemen,

I was with 1st Recon Bn 1993 to 1995. I attached right after completing ranger school.

I have been meaning to join the association, but as with most things life got in the way.

My Father, Col Roy H Shelton Jr USMC (Ret) passed away earlier this year. Unfortunately, he committed suicide. His passing made me reflect on those people and organizations that had the largest impact on my personal and professional life.

This battalion did that.

In addition, I have been working as a contractor in overseas from Africa, Middle East and Eastern Europe. I'd like to join the association so I can pay things forward by identifying opportunities for members of this community.

Best regards,

Frank Shelton

I've been asked over & over again "why Sergeant Southall". My answer will always be, it could have been any of us in 1st Recon. You will see that if you follow along with the story. It's a work in progress.

2024

Hello,

I stumbled on to your web site https://1streconbn.org/ in doing some research for my father who unfortunately has developed dementia.

I am wondering if you can help me. We are trying to confirm his Vietnam Service and unfortunately his official papers have no record of it. Based on his stories and experiences, my sister and I firmly believe he was there.

His personnel record shows the following:

 Mortar Battery, 2nd BN 12th Marines from June 20th 1963 -> May 20th 1964

1st Recon BN 1st Marine Division July 10th 1964 -> September 2nd, 1965

Would you happen to know anyone that perhaps was there in that timeframe and could help us?

We would appreciate any direction you might be able to provide.

 Sincerely,

 Todd & Jill Trein

This person posted a little information: "21st birthday during '68 Tet while on patrol north of Da Nang. Phil Phillips gave me a 'chocolate cake', pound cake with cocoa powder frosting." And he mentioned Freedom Hill as a base or station. MOS 8651.
Jones was a 1stLt when we served at G/2/5 and he may have separated as a Captain.

Thanks for the updates, the Treasurer’s job never ends.

What were the final sales figures for the reunion?

I still have a number of buckles and coins and the black shirts. I am going to offer the shirts at fire sale cost of $15 and postage. These shirts are all mammoth-petite. Does anyone have an objection to that.

RECON FALLS INTO ACTION: MARINES EXECUTE PARACHUTE

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDELTON, Calif --Marines with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division sharpened their airborne abilities by conducting static-line parachute operations and free fall jump training aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Oct. 16, 2015.

1st Recon Bn’s mission is to conduct reconnaissance and surveillance in support of the division’s operations. Their mission focuses on acquiring information on the environment and enemy in areas which require human collection. Due to their extensive training, the personnel of 1st Recon are capable of conducting a wide variety of missions in any clime and place, including those which require air insert.

Gunnery Sgt. Gabriel Machado, an airborne and air delivery specialist with 1st Recon Bn., explained that inserting via airborne methods gives the battalion an important asset. For more Info click the photo above.

Gunnery Sgt. Gabriel Machado 2015

Hello Floyd

I am a Marine Corps Vietnam veteran who was briefly TAD to Delta Co., 1st Recon Bn during July and August of 1969.

For the past seven years I have been working with The Greatest Generations Foundation supporting veterans of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Please visit our website for more information: www.tggf.org.

We have a program coming up in April of 2024 dedicated to Marine Recon which will involve taking 12 Marines back to Vietnam all expenses paid. The Foundation is supported privately by our benefactors and we are not soliciting or requiring any financial assistance. There is a very special mission we are trying to accomplish: Recovery of the Camp Reasoner Gate Sign and Guard Post and re-installation of both at Camp Pendleton.

https://www.marinecorpstimes.com/newsletters/daily-news-roundup/2020/10/05/greater-love-hath-no-man-marines-in-congress-request-camp-reasoner-sign-be-sent-from-vietnam-to-the-us/

There have been several attempts to do this in the past and all have failed. We have a donor willing to support this effort and cost is not an issue.

Could you please get back to me so we can set up a time to discuss?
