"Taps" is a bugle call T- a signal, not a song. As such, there is no associated lyric. Many bugle calls had words associated with them as a mnemonic device but these are not lyrics.

A Horace Lorenzo Trim wrote a set of words intended to accompany the music:

Mr. Roger Dennis Fleming, 68, of Supply, NC, formerly of Valdese, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at his residence. Roger was born on July 3, 1949 in Catawba County to the late Weaver Dennis Fleming and Ruby Kent Fleming. He was formerly employed as a machinist in the electrical industry and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Phillip Fleming. Survivors include his wife, Carol Burns Fleming of the home, one son, Jason Fleming and wife Karen of Hickory, and one daughter, Kana Fleming and partner Megan Russell of Hildebran. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Lauren and Megan Fleming of Hickory and two brothers, David and Stephen Fleming. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at 3:00 P.M. at Enon Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Garner officiating and with Military Honors provided by the U.S. Marine Corp and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. at Enon Baptist Church. JONES, JAMES F. 70, of Warwick, died September 7, 2016 at Kent Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Eileen J. (Casey) Jones. Born in Providence, James was a son of Ina Mae (Chase) Jones and the late Leslie F. Jones. He was employed as a foreman at National Grid. Jim was a gentle man, a gentleman and above all a US Marine. An expert rifleman, James served in Vietnam and was the recipient of several service awards. Besides his mother, James is also survived by a daughter: Stephanie E. Wescott; a step-daughter: Carole Johanson; four step-sons: Joseph LeClair, Christopher LeClair, Raymond Cekala and James Kimball; two brothers: William R. Jones and Jeffrey J. Jones (Diane); a sister: Leslie J. Herman; four grandchildren; and his dog and companion: Buddy. He was the brother of the late Michael A. Jones. Obituary for Robert (Lansing) Thornton
Mr. Robert Thornton passed away on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 at McLaren Hospital in Lansing, Michigan at the age of 70 years. Robert was born on May 21, 1946 in Demopolis, Alabama to the late Jacques Smith and Martha Thornton-Washington.
Robert spent the first eight years of his life being raised by his late grandmother, Tilly Thornton, living on the familys sharecropping farm in Coffeeville, Alabama before reuniting with his mother and moving to Detroit, Michigan. Life was not easy for Robert as a child; he often shared his stories of living, sleeping, and eating on the streets of Detroit. Two Detroit Police officers found him and arranged temporary shelter for him at St. Dominics Catholic Church and ultimately, the Wayne County Youth Home. No matter how chaotic life was for him, Robert continued with his education and enjoyed success at Northwestern High School as a track and field star.
At the age of seventeen, Robert joined the Marine Corps and his life from that point changed forever. Soon after Basic Training, Robert, an assigned Infantry rifleman, qualified and became a member of the 1st Force Reconnaissance Battalion Company. While serving multiple tours of duty in Vietnam he was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star Medal with Combat at V, the Vietnam, Cross of Gallantry with Palm, a Vietnam Service Medal with three Battle Stars, a Vietnamese Campaign Medal, a Combat Action Medal, A Presidential Unit Citation, A Navy Unit Citation, and A Good Conduct Medal. Upon his honorable discharge from active duty his loyalty to the United States Marine Corps did not end. Robert signed on and continued his military career with the Marine Corps Active Reserves in Detroit, Michigan ultimately being assigned as the Rifle Platoon Leader and obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.
Once his military career ended Robert Thunder joined his brothers in blue and served forty plus years with the Michigan State Police where he earned two Bravery Awards, a Meritorious Service Award, the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police Distinguished Service Medal, a Son of the American Revolution Medal for Heroism, an Honorable Mention Award and a Unit Citation. All of those blessed to know him knew he was an avid storyteller, had a love for hitting the open road and driving trucks riddled with Marine stickers. He was a committed and staunch military veteran, and more importantly, a loving father and grandfather.
Robert leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Nicole Thornton Williams and Dawn Thornton; one son, Tony Thornton, Sr.; thirteen grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a multitude of sons, daughters, and grandchildren he called his own.
Robert was preceded in death by his son, DeAndre Carlos Thornton, his mother and step-father, Martha and Leon Washington, and the woman he called mom, Louise Barnes.
Robert Thunder was a proud member of the Michigan State Police, and an even prouder member of the United States Marine Corps (USMC). It was his wish to be buried alongside his military brothers at Arlington National Cemetery. Jimmy Linton Rosser, 75, of 334 Plantation Road, Martinsville, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Stanleytown Health Care Center.

He was born Oct. 10, 1934, in Tallassee, Ala., to Dane Linton and Henri Fite Rosser. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He graduated from Anniston High School in 1952 and Auburn University in 1956, where he was a Spade, vice president of the student body and a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity.

 
Rosser was a first lieutenant in the Marine Corps stationed in Quantico and Camp Pendleton as a reconnaissance platoon commander.

He was employed by Burlington Industries and American of Martinsville from 1967 to 1984, and Ameristaff from 1985 to 1993.

Rosser served as president of the Martinsville-Henry County Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Governor’s Private Industry Council, president of the Blue Ridge Personnel Association and president of Martinsville-Henry County United Way.

He was an official in the Atlantic Coast Conference and had officiated in the Blue Bonnet Bowl and the Orange Bowl. He retired as a back judge in the National Football League in 1988.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

 
Surviving are his wife, Sue Wooldridge Rosser; daughters, Clara Jane Snipes of Keswick and Mary Linton Rosser of Richmond; three grandchildren; step-children, Ginger Stone Wagoner, Anne Carlton Stone Ruark and Jonathan Reid Stone; and eight step-grandchildren.

The service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Ellen J. Hanckel officiating. A private inurnment will take place before the service.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 4162, Martinsville, Va. 24115.

I received the following sad news from Paul Olenski about the passing of another Recon brother:

The passing of a great Marine, the 'Ragin Cajun' PFC Robert "Danny" Anders, Purple Heart, numerous long range recon combat patrols with RECON TEAM: MAD HATTER. Passed on September 13, 2019, in Louisiana. Danny and I went all the way back to boot camp together. Honor Platoon 2074. He is a legend in the Recon Community and was "Cherry Picked" for Sgt John Sleeper's team. (more to follow). There was about 8 of us Recon Marines who hung together through Boot Camp/ITR/Recon School and then off to Vietnam. 3 of us, Danny, Mike Ward and me went to Charlie Company, 1st Recon Bn/1st Force Recon Company up north at Phu Bai/Hue City - the other 5 stayed in Danang. Best buddies I ever had. See you at sundown Danny.
