"Taps" is a bugle call T- a signal, not a song. As such, there is no associated lyric. Many bugle calls had words associated with them as a mnemonic device but these are not lyrics.

A Horace Lorenzo Trim wrote a set of words intended to accompany the music:

COL. WILLIAM H. "DOC" WHITE Col. William H. "Doc" White, 76, of Hampstead, died April 1, 2015, at Onslow Memorial Hospital, in Jacksonville, NC. Doc retired from the US Marine Corps after 27 years. During this time, he did two tours of duty in Vietnam. He also had four years of service at Naval Academy. After retiring, he worked with Service Master in fire and water restoration. Doc was Cmdr of American Legion Post 167 in Hampstead, member of VFW Post 9983 in Holly Ridge, Marine Corps League, Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter and a 1961 graduate of the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. Survivors include his son, William B. White and brothers, Clarence H. White, Jr. and Richard Y. White. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Naval Academy Alumni Association. Michael "Mike" K. Cassidy, 66, from Thurmont, Maryland, and previously of Prince George's County, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington D.C.

Born on April 24, 1948, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late George and Margaret (Hoffman) Cassidy.

Mike graduated from Altooona High School in 1966. After graduation, Mike joined the Navy and was stationed at Bethesda Naval Hospital before completing a tour in Vietnam. Later, he attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Horticulture.

He was a member of St. Timothy Catholic Church in Walkersville, Maryland. He was also the former Mayor of Cottage City in Prince George's County, and Past Commander and District Commander of the V.F.W. Post #8950 in Greenbelt. He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

For more than twenty years, Mike worked for NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, as a computer programmer.

Mike loved spending time with his family, traveling, and was an avid train enthusiast.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Kathy Cassidy, whom he married on November 8, 1969; his three sons, Steve Cassidy of Thurmont, Joseph Cassidy of Germantown, Maryland, and James Cassidy and wife, Jennifer, of Thurmont; his two daughters, Yvonne Cassidy of Germantown, Maryland and Lisa Cassidy. his seven grandchildren, Kerri Kuhn, Rachel, Nataleigh, Thomas, Keegan, Ryleigh, and Jocelyn Cassidy; and his two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Lillie Kuhn. He is also survived by his sister, Kathleen Glass and husband, Tony, of Maude, Oklahoma; and his two brothers, Terry and Eugene Cassidy.

In addition to his parents, he is also predeceased by his son, Christopher Cassidy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 22, 2015, at St. Timothy Catholic Church, 8651 Biggs Ford Rd, Walkersville, MD 21793. Monsignor Richard Murphy will be the celebrant. Final resting-place ceremonies will follow at Utica Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Maryland 21702.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231 or to the National Kidney Foundation, National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016.

Gunny PU was an outstanding recon team leader when I was with 1st Force Recon Company in South Vietnam and he later served with distinction with the CIA as a PRU advisor in I Corps. A terrific Marine and a wonderful man who loved his family, friends, Corps and country. God bless him.

I served with (then) Sgt Pupuhi at 1st Recon Bn in 1970 and knew him very well. Although we had no contact with each other these past 44 years, I always remembered him. He was a Marine's Marine in combat. Our Battalion was the pride of the Marine Corps, and he was a hero among us.

THE SILVER STAR

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Rodney H. Pupuhi (MCSN: 1486978), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company D, First Reconnaissance Battalion, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours of 19 February 1968, while occupying positions on Hill 425 near DaNang, Sergeant Pupuhi's thirteen-man patrol was attacked by an estimated fifty Viet Cong employing hand grenades, automatic weapons and anti-tank rocket launchers. During the initial moments of the engagement, the Marines' only machine gun failed to fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Pupuhi unhesitatingly exposed himself to enemy fire while repeatedly maneuvering to more advantageous positions from which to direct fire at the enemy force. Suddenly, the Viet Cong penetrated the outer defenses of the Marines' position. As the enemy soldiers attempted to overrun his position, Sergeant Pupuhi rushed forward and killed five of the attackers with accurate rifle fire. Detonating previously emplaced defensive mines, he prevented the Viet Cong from mounting a second assault. Although painfully wounded in the legs by fragments from an exploding enemy grenade, Sergeant Pupuhi continued to throw grenades and direct his unit's fire at the enemy. His exceptional professionalism and determined efforts were an inspiration to all who observed him and resulted in seven enemy soldiers confirmed and twenty-five probable killed. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Sergeant Pupuhi prevented his unit from being overrun and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.

Obituary

Rodney Harry Pupuhi, also known as Pu, was born on Aug.18, 1937, in Honolulu, to the late Samuel Pupuhi and Mary Kauakahi. Pu passed away on Friday, Oct. 24, at The Gardens Rehab and Care Center in Kingman.

 

Pu is survived by his spouse Dora; son, Samuel Pupuhi (Hawaii); four daughters, Maria, Monica, Muneca (California) and Norma (Oklahoma); 11 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

 

During his life, he worked as a journeyman welder, security guard, postman, and deputy sheriff. Pu belonged to the Sons of Hawaii Motorcycle Club, and the Outside Motorcycle Club in Kingman.

 

His military service includes: 1st Force Recon Co, 1st Recon Battalion, 3rd Recon Battalion, 5th Recon Battalion, 6th Force Recon Co. Pu received the Silver Star and a Purple Heart.

 

The Pupuhi's will have private family services and ashes will be scattered in the ocean where he loved to swim and snorkel.

 WEAVERVILLE– Michael J. St. Clair, age 75, of Weaverville, died Friday, September 1, 2017.

Mr. St. Clair was born January 14, 1942 in Los Angeles, CA. He served in the United States Marines for 30 yrs. He was the husband of the late Judith St. Clair who died in 2008.

 

Surviving are his wife of seven years, Carol McMichael; daughter, Stephanie St. Clair and grandson, Ryan Cleveland.

 

His memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, September 30, 2017, in Grace Episcopal Church, Asheville. West Funeral Home is assisting the family.

 

In lieu of flowers, those desiring to make a memorial contribution are encouraged to consider: Grace Episcopal Church, 871 Merrimon Ave., Asheville, NC 28804.

He served in the United States Marines for 30 years.

Michael was a resident of Weaverville, North Carolina at the time of passing.
