LCpl Southall 21st Patrol 146 hours with 11 sightings on Hill 425.

Members of Lance corporal Jim Southall's 21st patrol were:

Cpl Jimmy Linn, this is the 6th time they will work together on patrol. These are the ten patrols they worked together on: patrols 14-18 & 21-25. Cpl Linn is one of the best patrol leaders he will have in the 1st Recon Battalion in Vietnam.

Cpl Dorriety, worked with Jim Southall on ten patrols in 1st Recon Battalion. Patrols 15-17, 19, 21-24 & 26-27 in 1968.

LCpl Jerry Keker, will appear on 13th patrol reports with Jim Southall in 1968. Patrols 12-19, 21-23 & 26-27 Jerry carried the M-79 grenade launcher on most of the patrols. He was a member of Bravo Company 1968-1969. Jerry Passed Away peacefully on February 7, 2015. Click Here

Corpsman Cothran, this is the 2nd patrol he worked together with Jim Southall. They will work together on 7 patrols in 1968. Patrols 19, 21-22 and 24-27 this was one of the best corpsman in 1st Recon.

LCpl Morris, this is the 6th time they will work together on patrol. Patrols 2-3, 12, 18-23 and 25-27 before Jim Southall is wounded in action (WIA) on his 28 patrol in 1968.

PFC Washburn, will appear on 7 patrol reports with Jim Southall. Patrols 5, 13-15, 19, 21 & 23 in 1968.

PFC Nelson Livington, was one of the best radio operator in Bravo Company. He will work with Jim Southall on 13 patrols in 1968. Patrols 14-19 and 21-27.

LCpl Kraskiewicz, this is the last Patrol he worked with Jim Southall in 1968. They worked together on 3 patrols. Patrols 19-21 LCpl Kraskiewicz was WIA on Hill 200 June 3rd, 1968 when the patrol was attacked by an over 40 VC/NVA. The attack was very sudden and opened with a number of large explosions of unknown origin. As the patrol returned fire the VC/NVA swrpt through their positionin in a few minutes, immediately following the explosions. The action resulted in 8 USMC KIA & the balance of the team (7 Marines) was wounded in action some very serious. LCpl Kraskiewicz was one of few Marines eventually released to return to duty.

PFC Delbert Enos, this is the 10th time they worked together on patrol. Patrols 10-19, 21-23 & 25-27 in 1968. PFC Delbert Enos worked as the rear point (tail-end Charlie) on most of his Patrols with 1st Recon.

PFC George Douglas, this is the 5th time he worked with Jim Southall on Patrol in Vietnam in 1968. Patrols 5-7, 11, 19 & 21 in the 1st Recon Battalion.

PFC Franklin, only worked with Jim Southall on one patrol in 1st Recon Battalion.

PFC Jerry Johnson, this is the last time he worked with Jim Southall on patrol. Patrols 5 & this patrol #21 in 1968.

PFC Ricky Spees, this is the first patrol he worked with Jim Southall. They will work together on 4 patrols. Patrols 21, 26, 29, and 33 was the Patrol where Lieutenant Brian Riley's 1st Recon team accidentally tripped a enemy's booby trap April 13th, 1969 at 1650 hours. He was seriously wounded by the blast and medevac. He eventually lost one of his legs and retired from the Marine Corps.  Click Here

PFC Armstrong, this is the 3th Patrol with Jim Southall in 1968. They will work together on 5 patrols. Patrols 14, 15 & 21-23 in 1st Recon Battalion. 

Sergeant William R. "Bill" Smith, this is the 1st only time Sgt Smith & Jim Southall  worked together on a patrol in Vietnam. Sgt Smith and one other Marine was medevac off Hill 425 during this patrol I'm looking for information related to this incident in June of 1968. Sergeant Smith received 4 Purple Heart while serving in Alpha & Bravo Companies in the 1st Recon Battalion. Sgt William R. "Bill" Smith passed away on June 6th, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born December 12th, 1947 in Harrisburg, PA Click Here

LCpl Gillen, this is the 6th Patrol with Jim Southall in 1968. They will work together on 7 patrols. Patrols 5, 11-14, 21 & 33 on Hill 200 with Lieutenant Brian Riley, Cpl Lee Larsen, LCpl Harkins & Corpsman HM3 Gary Graves. Click Here

LCpl James M Collins, will appear on 2 patrol reports with Jim Southall. Patrols 4 & 21 in 1968. BRAVO CO. NOV.67-DEC.68  a member of the 1st Recon Battalion Association he lives in West Haven, Connecticut.
