Part 2 Keep the emails coming.

Thanks for keeping us current Floyd!

I would like to attend, but several pressing medical issues are limiting my ability to travel beyond home base at this time.  I appreciate hearing all about your planning and will look forward to your recap of the reunion when appropriate!

I have attached my good buddy Lt. Col. Cliff Dunning to this mailing as he became the 1st Recon Bn. CO 11 years after I served there…

Floyd,

Thank you very much.
I was in Echo Co. the entire time. I got there on the afternoon of July 3rd. While checking into the BAS on the morning of 4th July, the Bn Commander came rushing into the BAS and told Terry (the corpsman checking me in) that they needed a corpsman NOW for a reactionary force. The Recon team, don't remember what company, was pinned down at their extraction point, the patrol leader was wounded, a Lt. Terry asked me if I wanted to get some experience, I felt the sooner the better, so I agreed to go. To make a long story short we ran low on gas (CH-46) circling the extraction point for what seemed like hours as the F-4s dropped their ordinance around the team. The CH-46 pilot found a base with fuel, ROC Marine base, where we met a very lonely Marine stationed on that base. He was so glad to see Americans even if for a short period of time. We returned to the extraction point and finally got the ok to go in to pick up the team. We were taking a lot of small arms fire and as I was firing my M-16 through one of the port holes the gunner (on my right) took a round. My first casualty. This was before the team could make their way toward the bird. Oh, and my M-16 jammed. I will never forget, the Lt took a round (s) in the head and was wrapped up with gauze. Once we got him in the bird my job was to support his head carefully because his skull was moving like a cracked egg. I understand he lived. When we arrived at the Naval hospital the pilot rushed everybody out of the bird as if it was going to explode and later I found out there were 70 some? holes from small arms fire. I could FEEL the rounds passing around me during the extraction. I also remember that a day or two earlier we lost an entire team, I believe while they were being extracted. This introduction was what was to come for me because it seemed action following me was as normal as a cat chasing a bird.

Semper Fi,

Doc

P.S. I don't know if you knew 1st Sargent Jacques. He was Echo Companies 1st Sargent for the 1st six months I was attacted to Echo. I was in the bush with him more than once and I regret not attending a reunion before he passed. It is a rare day that goes by that I don't think about him.

Herman,

Oops it was a typo old friend. Thanks for pointing that out. Yes I was in Bravo Company with you.

I'm running on very little sleep lately. Trying to get caught up on my work.
Plus we reopened our business after being closed for 14 months due to covid-19.
We've been extremely busy at the antique mall since reopening 3 weeks ago.
I guess I have too much on my plate at this time.

I'm almost caught up on the 1st recon battalion associations directories.
The problem I'm running into right now is that I keep stumbling across fallen brothers.
I'm doing Memorial pages right and left. I put out 2 today and both of them were Navy corpsman from 1st force.
I'm hoping I will be wrapping this up in about 2 weeks.

At that time I'll switch over to my high school class website.
They have a reunion also in August of this year. I met with the president of my class yesterday for lunch.
I've got a list of things that I need to do preparing for the August reunion.

I can go on and on but I don't want to bend your ear too much.
One of the biggest issues I have right now is my father who is 94 1/2 years old.

Floyd Sr. a WW2 Naval veteran who is legally blind, can't walk very well and he cannot swim.
He decided to fly in unexpected from Las Vegas where he lives to go fishing in Minnesota 3 weeks ago.

I have family members who've taken him out fishing. He's not caught a fish yet but he's trying.
I just feel that this is not going to end well. I have been pulling my hair out and I don't have much to lose.

I'll keep you posted my friend.

Have a great 4th of July my friend and stay safe.

Floyd,

Thank you for all the work you’ve done and continue to do. I’ll not be able to make the reunion this year but looking forward to next year.

Steve Risk

Thanks Steve,

See you next year.

Floyd

Jim,

Nice to hear from you on this glorious day. I have your last name ending with an E and not a W on the association's directory is that my mistake?

Yes to your question. Quite a few members from Bravo Company 68, 69 & 70 still kicking and going to reunions.

We have a reunion in August in Oceanside, California for the association and then Bravo Company has a reunion in Las Vegas in November of this year.

Hopefully I'll see you at one of them. If not maybe next year, God willing.

Take care and stay safe my friend.
