Orlando Torres-Oyola

Cementerio Monte Calvario
Caguas, Caguas Municipality, Puerto Rico, USA

Orlando Torres-Oyola, a resident of Cayey, Puerto Rico, was drafted into military service, and chose to enter the Marine Corps rather than the Army. After reporting for service on 09 Apr 1969 he received basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina. Following advanced training as a machine gunner he received orders to Vietnam.

On arrival in RVN on 10 Nov 1969 he was assigned to A Company of the 1st Recon Battalion. On 09 Aug 1970 Corporal Torres-Oyola was wounded by a booby-trap during a patrol on Nui Da Tho Mountain about 12 kilometers south of Dien Ban in Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. He was hospitalized in the 1st Medical Battalion hospital at DaNang, but died of his injuries on 14 Aug 1970.

His body was returned to his parents, Feliciano Torres Lopez and Maria D Oyola De Torres. They chose to bury their son in the Cementerio Monte Calvario in Caguas.

Mr. Torres actually submitted two DD Form 1330 applications for a military grave marker. The first, on 03 Sep 1970, mistakenly gave his son's unit as the 1st Med Battalion, where he died. The second, dated 18 Sep 1970, gave the correct unit - A Co, 1st Recon Bn.
