Wesley Ray Johnson, 91, passed away on June 26, 2024, in Belleville, MI. Born on March 21, 1933, in Cincinnati, OH, Wesley embarked on a life marked by dedication, service, and a profound appreciation for the arts and community.

Wesley graduated from Ypsilanti High School before continuing his education at Wayne County Community College and the Detroit College of Business. His pursuit of knowledge was a lifelong theme that paralleled his vibrant career and personal interests.

In 1951, Wesley began a distinguished military career in the United States Marine Corps, serving actively until 1971 and continuing in the reserves until 1981. Throughout his service, he rose to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and was a proud member of the USMC 1st Reconnaissance Battalion Force, living up to their motto "Swift-Silent-Deadly." His bravery and leadership were evident through his deployments, including one tour in the Korean War and three tours in the Vietnam War.

Following his military service, Wesley joined Ford Motor Company where he worked from 1971 until 1996, holding positions as a general foreman and line supervisor. His leadership skills were invaluable in his roles, influencing many.

Wesley's passions were reflective of his diverse and vibrant personality. He had a deep appreciation for jazz music, black art, and was an avid reader. His interests also extended to cars, sightseeing, history, military affairs, and sports, particularly the WNBA. He cherished the beauty of flowers, further highlighting his multifaceted nature.

Wesley was preceded in death by his parents, James and Celia Johnson; his brother, Sam Smith; and a son through marriage. He is survived by his siblings, Edna Walker, Brenda Bonner, and Margaret Huckabey; his sons, James S. Johnson II, Dana R. Johnson (Emily), Marcus D. Johnson (Deborah), and Kelton C. Johnson; 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, with additional family members through two unions totaling 18 more children and 25 great-grandchildren. His extended family includes a host of cousins, other relatives, a god-niece, and many friends and special friends.

The community is invited to honor Wesley's life at Penn Funeral Home, located at 3015 South Inkster Rd, Inkster, MI 48141. Public viewing will be held on Friday, July 5, 2024, from 1:30 PM until 6:00 PM. Family hour will commence on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM. Wesley's legacy of bravery, kindness, and community involvement leaves an indelible mark on all who knew him.
