Last night I awoke to the sounds of thunder. I was recalling a small part of a day a long time ago. As if it was yesterday...

Today is a particularly dreary, rainy day. Lookout Mountain is socked in good. It is not unusual for it to be socked in. Hell they fought the Battle Above the Clouds there during the Civil War.

However, today it put me in mind of another dreary, socked in ridge I was on for around 2 hours on 3 June, 1968. Known only to me as Hill 200, it was a desolate, indefensible place that somebody in the 1st Mardiv G3 shop picked off the map to insert my platoon on as an observation post & radio relay.

"A Brotherhood Forged In Combat"

A Summer Day In Nam,

Last night I awoke to the sounds of thunder. I was recalling a small part of a day a long time ago. As if it was yesterday, as I remember, it was the height of the war that day in ‘69. It seems to be bits and pieces of time that have been locked away for fifty + years. Names and places are not clear to me now, so I’ll do my best to remember. The team of 8 Recon Marines consisted of young, tough, bronzed warriors with an attitude, a gung ho bunch of Marines from the 1st Recon Battalion, Bravo Company, 2nd Platoon. Team name “call sign” unknown at this time. I can’t recall the team’s name for this mission but the team names that come to mind are Blue Spruce, Cayenne, Panama Hat and Albrook that I worked with from time to time. My team was getting briefed by 1st Lt. Riley, his name I can recall. 1st Lt. Brian Riley sticks in my mind because I felt I was responsible for his death and that been playing on my mind all these years. You see, as the pointman for this small team of marines. I was responsible for finding and clearing the areas of all the booby traps, mines and all other devices that can wreak havoc on my brothers in my team. As a scout I took my job seriously all the time and on all my missions. It so happened by faith, maybe luck that I considered myself to be very lucky in life and in the years of ‘68 and ‘69 and so was my good friend Lance Corporal Herman Jonse, I’ll call him Jonsey for short. Yes my good friend Jonsey of Bravo Company, at the time had just returned from R&R “rest and recuperation” in Australia where he met Margaret his wife to be, Margaret. What can I say about Margaret but she was a peach, a down to earth woman and I thought Jonsey was the luckiest guy on earth. But at the time I was a dumb kid and I had no plans to go on R&R. As I told my friend I’m saving for a brand new car. And I can recall that car today that I was saving for, it was a green 1969 Chevy with white racing stripes. A new ’69 Chevy Chevelle SS “Super Sport” with a 396 high performance engine with a Holley carburetor, chrome wheels with Goodyear F70-14 polyglass tires and this car had a Delco AM radio. Well to make a long story short Jonsey talked me into going to Australia for a week to meet his wife to be. I can recall that time in Australia and meeting Margaret as one of the best vacations I ever had and thanks to Jonsey and Margaret that R&R to Australia April 8th through April 15th, 1969 maybe saved my life who knows. Only one week, but your life can end in a week. When I returned to the Battalion on April 16th I found out that my team had been lost to a mine or some kind of booby trap. And 1st Lt. Riley had taken the brunt of it all and my replacement at point and our radioman were medevac and I did not hear from them again. So I felt responsible at the time for not protecting my team on that mission because 1st Lt. Brian Riley was the Marine leading this mission on this day. He was giving the briefing the night before this mission. I recall parts of the mission and the high probability of making contact deep in enemy controlled territory. I recall that this didn’t seem to bother me at that time because I had been on plenty of patrols, about 20 missions in all to date, and because of my experience at that time as a scout. This was to be only one more mission to me. As I think back on this now I wonder why is this one mission constantly on my mind? After fifty years, why is this day on my mind. I seem to be reliving this day over and over in my mind. Like the movie “Ground Hog Day” where Bill Murray is living Ground Hog Day over and over and it seems to never end for him until he can get it right. As I wrote this down for the first time "ten years ago", it seems to be playing out and starting to come back to me a little clearer. Each time I sit down to write now my time line of 1968-1969 is becoming clearer to me. I stumbled across the 1st Reconnaissance website on June 3rd, 2008. I was on Ebay comparing prices, thinking about inventory on hand in my Mall that day and looking for inventory to purchase for my antique business. I don’t know to this day why I keyed in Recon. It seemed to pop into my mind. I was surprised to see all the items listed under Recon on Ebay that day. I don’t know why, maybe curiosity made me switch from Ebay to my search engine and key in 1st Recon Battalion, When I keyed in 1st Recon Battalion that changed everything for me on that day in 2008. Up to that point in time I thought I had sealed the memories away for good. With that click of my mouse up popped the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion’s website. Oh my God, I didn’t believe it, my old unit in Nam. At the same time a peaceful feeling came over me like running into an old friend. yes like running into a friend. This feeling is hard for me to describe. I can recall the day I arrived at 1st Recon in Vietnam as a green know it all rookie marine with an attitude and gung ho at the same time. I was going to win the war by myself. I can look back today on this and laugh at myself. What a dumb kid I must have been then. Only moments after arriving that day, reality set in and I learned quickly that I was in hell or some where close. I can recall clearly the day I arrived at 1st Recon. It was Saturday July 7th, 1968. I was one of the replacements for one of those brave men KIA “killed in action” on Hill 200 a month earlier on June 3rd, 1968. For more click to,

I don’t have any details of the services at this time. It is hard to accept the reality of life at times. We can’t begin to explain the hells of combat to those who were not there. For those who were, our bond will never be broken, our love for one another will never be stronger, and our loyalty need never be tested! Ronald Overton, Visited the battleship New Jersey today - BB-62. Wow. She spent 7 months off Danang in the gun line, late 1968-1969. Recon had a lot of fire missions from the girl and she 'brought it'. She was decommissioned in the 1980s and spent time in the Middle East. 19 battle stars and 3 in Vietnam. The rounds passed over our heads at Camp Reasoner. It wasn’t at crack like in the target butts, but more of a thunder clap. I thought of Thor throwing his hammer or someone chucking boxcars. A three round salvo from one turret was by definition Grid Destruct. A square kilometer and nothing left but three craters. OoohRah

PS – Ironic we crossed paths after so many years.  I remember you and your wife attending the very first Reunions in Columbus, Ohio, Cinncinatti, Indianopolis, etc.  Its been a long but amazing journey.  We’ve laid a strong foundation (I remember tracking down 3 of my other teammates for the 1st reunion – despite looking for a total of 14 other teammates.  A total of 6 attended reunions representing Recon Team:  Dublin City.  Surprisingly, we just found our Patrol Leader after 57 years.  And yes, he truly is the Pride of the Marines and a cunning bastard who outsmarted the enemies’ counter-recon teams around Phu Bai/Hue City.  I’m not saying we didn’t get our hair mussed a bit but they paid a heavy price.

Sadly, we’re now dying off.  So despite a strong foundation, I hope we continue the effort in documenting our history and decorating the upper floors with curtains and shades (where appropriate).  Ironic to learn a few years ago you’re from the St. Paul area.  My beloved Carolyn who passed in 2023 has a daughter living in Woodbury, MN.  Her husband Adam is from the area.  My beloved is from Northwest Indiana a suburb of Chicago where I grew up.  About 8 years ago we started gong up to Woodbury/St. Paul to watch her granddaughters dance with the Larkin Dance Group.  And the joy of huge recitals at St. Catherine’s College.  WOW – what a wonderful and artistic experience.  St. Paul is a neat, cultured and beautiful community.  You folks did it right.

So we will see you in D.C. in a few weeks.  Another great reunion.

Thanks for the email William. I'll post your email on the website at: https://www.1streconbn.org/new-messages-part-46.html soon and maybe we will have a reunion in the Rockers someday soon. Have a great day. I'll post photos of this years reunion in my last posting as webmaster at the some link.

Sgt. Hughes,

After I sent your email on Saturday July 8th, 2023, I thought this has got to be one of our oldest members of our association. Life is too short to pass up this opportunity.

So I'm dropping you a line thanking you for your service to our country. It would be nice if other members would do the same. It would make life a little more pleasant. Life is too short my brother so I'm not passing  up this opportunity. I'm sure we've met but I don't remember where or when. I've been the association webmaster and membership director for the last 6 years. Hopefully you had some time to look over our website and possibly have seen some of the articles or stories I have done. I'm always interested in looking for interesting stories or photos to put on our website. I'm inviting you to share a story or two with me. I'll post it on our newsletter which is on our website now. The 1st Reconnaissance Battalion Association’s 2023 reunion will be held in concert with the 1st Marine Division Association’s 76th Annual Reunion at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Location and Date: Orleans Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada.  1st Marine Division Association 13-20 August 2023; 1st Recon reunion events are 16-19 August. I'll send you a copy of Charlie's letter. Hopefully you can make it to the reunion. If not hopefully I'll see you at a up-and-coming reunion. Take care Sergeant and thanks for your service.

He's not going to be able to make the reuion this year due to medical issues. Hopefully he will back on his feet and feeling better soon. I sent him a prayer and my best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Hopefully he'll be back at our next reunion in 2026.

I’m just curious. Whatever happened to the 1st Recon Bn reunion being held at Camp Talega, or Big Helen’s in San Clemente? Seems a reunion where we served would be better than a town/city elsewher. Just wondering?

Hello Floyd,
Sorry to hear you're turning over the reins as our WEBMASTER! Thanks for all the time you devoted to this job.

Hope to see you at our reunion. I can't make it until the 14th and 15th as we return home in Alexandria, VA the night of 8/13. I sent emails to both Ron and Charlie about late arrival but never received a response. I wonder if my emails are going to their junk folders??
Take care,
Bob

Thanks for the email. I'll post it on our newsletter this month. Maybe you'll get an answer.

I went back to RVN in Jan 1968. this time I served with Alpha and H&S (I'm a radio man by MOS). So, you only need to send me one email with relevant information. As always, watch your six!

Floyd,

My name is Bob Fawcett (1st Recon, 1970-71).  I am organizing the Rush Act Memorial Service for Charlie Kershaw.

I have signed up to the 1st Mar Div reunion and will be attending the FMDA dinner on Saturday.  I have also reported to Charlie that I will be attending the 1st Recon dinner on Thursday.  If you are keeping a parallel dinner list, please add my name.   I will not be going to 8th and I on Friday.

Since I live near Quantico, I have not signed up for the $45 bus trip to the Museum, but I will be there at the Museum since I am organizing the Memorial Service.

It is with deep sadness that I report the news of the death of Ed Palmer "PeeWee". He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends. We give thanks for PeeWee's life. Ed Passed Away July 19th, 2025

Nine Important Facts to Remember as We Grow Older

#9  Death is the number 1 killer in the world.
 #8  Life is sexually transmitted.
#7  Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
#6   Men have two motivations: hunger and hanky-panky, and they can't tell them apart.  If you see a gleam in his eyes, make him a sandwich.
#5  Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day.  Teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks, months, maybe years.
#4  Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in the hospital, dying of nothing.
#3  All of us could take a lesson from the weather.  It pays no attention to criticism.
#2  In the 60's, people took LSD to make the world weird.  Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal
#1  Life is like a jar of jalapeño peppers.  What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow.

Hi guys,

I say we take Mike up on his offer to both MC and Introduce our guest speaker.
For the auction I have a query out to Dane and Sandy Kucera.  They did it last year and were great. I'll be sending out an update later to the board, et al.
Sounds good.

Ron, Ralph et al,

You should determine who is hosting/MCing the recon Dinner ? And who is introducing our guest speaker?. I can do both, one or none. I know LGen Hailston extremely well and don’t mind doing it. Not certain on who should do it and defer to you both but wanted no surprises or last-minute goat ropes. We are recon we set the standard for division etc. etc. , Aruga, Aruga.

Happy to eat my steak and sit on my hands. Cheers Mike

Ralph,

All your information below looks great. Let’s push the word on the dinner. 75 is a large number. Ron, I think your counting heads and taking food orders, Sandy Fallon and I will do 1 chicken, 1 steak.

I will donate two of my books for the auction and two Hill 119 hats, to whomever is collecting the auction stuff.

Let’s keep communicating, it will make everything smoother.

Look at it as your Time Capsule. This website won't stand long after we are all gone.

The Recon dinner on Thursday night at the hotel has been confirmed. We'll be in the Galaxy Ballroom on the 16th floor and expect to start around 18:00, with Lt Gen (ret) Hailston (from 1st Recon Bn in 1970) as our guest speaker. Followed by our annual Auction which is always a lot of fun.

Price per person for the dinner is $70.  Ron Overton is maintaining a list of attendees -- we're limited to 75 persons.

This is what’s been requested for the Thurs night meal:Beverages:  Coffee, Hot and Iced Tea, Water, Rolls and butter, First Course:  Mixed Green Salad,Main Courses: Pan Seared Chicken |  Mashed Potatoes and Asparagus, Steak option | Green Beans and Roasted Red Bliss Potatoes, Dessert:Chocolate Ganache Torte Cake

We’ll have the speaker & other formalities first and then dinner, followed by the auction (which is the only Fund Raiser all year for our Association) at about 20:30, and will probably finish around 21:30
